About
“The aim of art is to represent not the outward appearance of things, but their inward significance.” Aristotle
Life is composed of an infinite variety of shapes and spaces, each that simultaneously exists as a part of the world and as a solitary identity. Memory fragments and sensory recollections color our daily observations, allowing us to create our own perceived reality.
My work is influenced by what I see and what I feel, so my creation process is very physical. As the canvas gets covered with lines, words, numbers, colors, scratches and more layers, I can see the painting emerge, and I find a certain relief or explanation of all the emotions I feel in my daily life. I am either black or white, rarely gray, so I need that dialogue to survive, or better, to live fully and express that visceral passion.
The result is a conversation: lines and colors portray an incessant dialogue of my competing impulses. The paintings cannot be repeated because they involve my journey from one emotion to the next. They are internal debates that I am attempting to externalize: be bold, be free, be true.
Bio
Born in Quebec, Canada, Paule Dubois Dupuis began as a self-taught watercolorist, eventually teaching others her methods, before the size of the paper felt too constraining. At 36 she returned to university, graduating magna cum laude with a BFA from Ottawa University, then studied at the San Francisco Art Institute after the family moved to California in 1999.
In 2018 she left the city for the Sierra Nevada, and now divides her days between her studio in Reno, her family and the mountains. Her work continues to evolve, shaped by the beauty of nature and a slower pace of life.
